A guide on how to interact in the IASPR Forum

What this covers: Posting

Some vocab words:
Categories- are the largest way that the forums are organized. Examples would be IASPR Announcements, Discussion, and IASPR Members Section.
Topics- the sub-headings below categories. In the IASPR Announcements they would be News, READ THIS FIRST, and Suggestions.
Post/thread- these are individual discussions within a certain topic.

Posting
There are two ways you can respond to a post. The first is when you respond to a post.
After you’ve signed into the forum, you should see a screen that looks similar to this:
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691906892/

Under the category called Discussion go to the topic called Chatter. Click on it. You should see a screen that looks like this:
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691101501/

Hit the button ADD Reply. You’ll get a screen that looks similar to this:
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691102001/

If you want to simply make a response, type into the text box, scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and click “Add Reply.”

There are a number of other buttons you can use if you would like to edit your post even more. Many of the buttons are similar to ones you would find in your e-mail or in Microsoft Word. If you would like to make your text bold, highlight it and hit the button with a ‘b’ on it. If you would like to put it into italics use ‘I.’ To Underline use ‘u.’

A note however. When you hit the buttons, the text you highlighted will have tags appear next to them. Tags appear like this: [b ]this[/ b], without the spaces in them.

Some features that you might not have encountered on your e-mail or in Word. If you click on the button with the capital A and the lowercase a you’ll have three options. Subscript and superscript are similar to word. Strikethrough will take the text between it and cross it out while still showing what had been written. This is often used when someone backedits a post.

The smile button gives a dropdown menu of different similes you can use to insert into your post.

To insert a link to another website click on the arrow with the green button. A pop-up window will appear asking you to type or paste the url into the box.

To know what the other buttons do, hover your mouse over the button and text will appear telling you what the button does.

Creating a post

The second way to write a post is when you create one.. Again, we’re going to go under the topic called Chatter. Click on it again.
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691908886/

Go to the button titled NEW TOPIC.
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691103003/

You should have a very similar screen to the one used to make a post. However, you have a new box called “Topic Details.” Fill in the topic title and description, and then make your post as you would normally when responding to another post. Here, we’re going to title the Post “Introduce Yourself.”

After you are finished writing your post, scroll down.
http://www.flickr.co...umn/3691103465/

Hit the button Post New Topic.

Your post should appear in the next screen.

Instructions Pending. Please reply to this telling me what you'd like this place to explain.

Can anyone enter topics? The post I'm working on has code at the top of the box. Actually, when I used "preview" the code does not display. Ah-ha.
Otherwise, am I basically on a discussion board?
Can I be (Am I being) alerted where there are new posts? (Actually, I just scrolled down and saw the "Enable email notification of replies.") Can we imagine that, for the first time in my entire life, I may actually use an emoticon?
As always, my gratitude for everyone's hard work in getting this stuff up and operational.

Anyone can start topics. It is basically a discussion board. When someone has a new post, you can see it because the "" will light up beside it.

Forums are great because they are extremely glorified listserves, and are a powerful tool for communication. I'm excited to have you signed up.

I guess I am finding it a little confusing. Couldn't tell if you hit the Add Reply before or after you type response.

You use it after you type what you want to write.

Looks good, but did you really mean to verbify "insider"? I flinched a bit. blink.gif

No. That's supposed to be insert. Thanks for checking. This is why I wanted to have someone read over it. I'll go fix it now.
